Just when I thought there weren’t that many things I cared enough to rant about.
I am hoping the papers jumped the gun and released one of their April 1st hoaxes early. If not, this is the worst news I have read in a week:
A new party that are calling themselves the “islam democrats” have sprung up in Denmark, hoping to get some of the voter juice from the 300.000 muslims living in Denmark (article in danish).
They think that islam is the route to a healthy society, and want it taught in school for a minimum of 2 hours per week.
Their political program states (translated):
We in the Islam Democrats support Sharia, but we think that all legal practice should be based on democratic values, meaning majority rule in the parliament.
Ah yes, examples of all those happy sharia-powered states like Afghanistan, Nigeria, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Libya come flooding to my mind. Oh, if only we could be more like them – there’s such a wait between good stonings in Denmark these days. Oh but wait, we would need a democratic majority for it. Darn.
They seem to want to do something about the freedom to drink alcohol in Denmark, not seeming to realize that this country they are currently enjoying was built by a bunch of piss-drunk vikings who beat the shit out of everyone else (admittedly, we’ve lost our edge since then).
They want to get rid of the freedom to have abortions. I am hoping they might also want to bring back other things from the pre-1973 era, like pneumatic mail and swing.
While I am sure that the party is relatively moderate compared to it’s foreign counterparts, I find that the only words that can possibly describe my feeling towards this initiative are “profoundly disgusted”.
We have a nearly atheistic society in Denmark. It seems we are finally getting closer to a mindset that will allow us to write the silly christianity stuff out of our constitution, and then these people want to use the votes of immigrants and political refugees to taint our democracy with their medieval anti-secular nonsense? I would be appalled to the shivering core of my being, if I thought they had any chance of success. As it is, I am mostly annoyed with all the energy being wasted on such futile prattle.
I fortunately think it would be highly unlikely for them to gain any political power in Denmark, but if they did, I would perceive it as a bug in our democracy that I would aggressively want to fix.
If these people get even a single mandate in our government a part of me will shrivel up and die, partly because I think a pro-sharia mindset has no place in our government, but much worse: Because that would most likely mean a backlash in the form of more power to our horrible nationalistic far right-wing party, that already have too embarrassingly much of it.
Here’s hoping that it’s an April Fool’s.
Update: Thank God (irony intended), it was a joke.
